Sunny and Cher

Gold Macaws

Where we found them

These two poor dears (our Blue and Gold Macaws) where also part of a breeding program, kept in a nest box and then the cage was basically the same size as the nest box, so they had very little space to move. Cher is a plucker and in the two years we have had her it is still firmly intrenched as a habit, but we are always happy to se her grow a bikini during winter.

We built a large aviary for the, would have loved it to be bigger, when we do move we are hoping to build them a large enclosure to try encourage them to try to fly. Sunny is rather sweet and is very protective of his bikini wearing mate.

Care

Other than Chers habitual plucking the pair are happy and rather healthy. They have tried to nest, but Cher seems to break the eggs rather early. We are looking into see if this is possibly due to a calcium deficiency on her part.

Interesting facts about Macaws

Macaws are social birds and typically form strong, monogamous pair bonds. They are often seen flying in large flocks and the bonded pairs fly close together, their wings nearly touching. When disturbed, these bright birds screech loudly and circle overhead with their long tails streaming. They are able to reach flying speeds of up to 56 kph (35 mph).

Macaws are playful and inquisitive and are able to mimic human vocalizations like other large species of parrots. They have a long lifespan (up to approx 60 years old) some have been recorded to live as long as 100 years.

They are distinctive by their large strong beaks that are perfectly adapted for cracking open and eating a wide variety of nuts and seeds.
