The African Greys
Arrived: Winter 2021
Where we found them
These birds are the elegant, skittish, yet simply beautiful. We found our Mama bear and Big Daddy for sale by a breeder looking to sell them to another breeder. We decided to go check them out as most breeding pairs a kept in confined spaces with very little light. And this is exactly what we found, we could not leave them with a chance that they might be bought by another breeder and never have much of a life.
This pair has brought us endless joy and much angst with a long but really heart felt story to tell. You can find it here ……
We now have 5 African Greys, another breeding pair that are very shy and only come out when no one is around and Dancer who is in an aviary with Mama Bear and Big Daddy. While Mama bear was recovering from her surgery we thought Dancer could keep a very protective Big Daddy company.
Care
After rescuing Mama Bear and Big Daddy we realised that she had an egg, we left it to see if it would hatch. At 3 weeks we took the Baby out to inspect only to find out that she had a broken leg (later to be known as Luna), so we had to remove her from the nest box and hand rear her (she is a very spoilt member of our family now). After removing her from the nest Mama bear started coming out the next box, which is when we found out that she had a cancerous growth on her wing.
