Baba and the Welshman – our Amazons

Arrived: Spring 2020

Where we found them

While working in Devon we found a friendly Amazon for sale by a couple who could no longer look after her, with complaints from their neighbours they were asked to give her up.

We kept track of how long she were on the preloved site and noticed that she had not found a home, we contacted the couple and went to go meet the her. And what we fell in love, she was loud, friendly and full of mischief.

Not being able to leave her we decided to home her. Not wanting to leave her alone we later heard about another Amazon that needed a home and decided to take him too. We called him the welshman (you can’t understand a word he says he sound like he is chatting in welsh)

Care:

These two little characters have been very happy and strong thoughout the years with us, from 2020 when we started. They were housed inside the house with Bubba who likes early morning rises and thought she needed to wake up the whole household at 5.45am. We then built outside aviaries to give our birds a bigger space, to hopefully learn to fly and have more space to call home, we moved them to one of the larger aviaries.

Interesting facts about Amazon Parrots

These parrots are also capable of mimicking human speech and are noisy birds. When they were first discovered, they were called “Kriken”, which is French for “screechers.” Like most parrots, these birds are monogamous and bond with one partner for life.

Amazons can fly between 40 and 50 miles per hour and as well as cockatoos and macaws, the Amazons will fly tens of kilometres per day in search of food.

Amazon parrots are vibrant, intelligent birds known for their striking plumage and charismatic personalities. These parrots can live for an impressive 40 to 70 years with proper care, making them a long-term companion for dedicated owners. Their diet primarily consists of a variety of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and specially formulated pellets to ensure balanced nutrition. Amazons are social and playful, often known for their remarkable ability to mimic human speech and sounds, showcasing their intelligence and adaptability. Interestingly, these parrots thrive on interaction and mental stimulation, often forming strong bonds with their owners. Native to Central and South America, Amazon parrots are also known for their loud, expressive vocalizations and their love of climbing and exploring. These traits make them fascinating pets but also require a commitment to their physical and mental well-being.
