Daisy and the boys – Cockatoos

Daisy and Pete have been pets for over 7 years, the “magnificent” was rescued from a hotel and the baby…

Where we found them

Daisy and Pete where purchased from an owner who no longer wanted “noisy birds”. Paul had always wanted a Galah for his daughter, and went to purchase the cage that was for sale, when he arrived the owner said that he could have the two birds as well. So being Paul he bought them home and tried to make friends. Pete has always been a big scaredy cat and Daisy well she has a love hate relationship with everyone. She loves you when you have a pistachio nut for her. Two years after we got them we decided to put them in a large aviary outside, but Daisy developed an issue with her beak and we had to bring her back inside and we started a long recovery, to find out more go to our blog post

Care

Dear Daisy has had a bumpy ride with many trips to the vets, a beak reconstruction, but she is still a happy bird who loves her pistachios. The boys are easy going and pretty much keep to themselves when they are not annoying Daisy.

Additional Project Info

They are known for their distinctive plumage (the feathers on their bodies) and crests (the feathers on their heads), which they can move. Cockatoos are commonly white with yellow crests. As a group the cockatoos are large destructive parrots that need to forage for most of the day to satisfy their hunger and nutrient needs. Pink Cockatoos spend most of their foraging time on the ground. White Cockatoos spend equal amounts of their foraging time on the ground and in trees. A cockatoo normally travels no further than 150km
Parrots can remember their owners and their scent too. If they don’t see their owner for a long time, they still recognise their owner whenever they see them.
These birds are very long-lived, and can live upwards of 70 years in captivity, although they only live to about 20–40 years in the wild.
