Jack and Jill the Australian parakeets (Barnard Parakeets)

and their curious babies

Where we found them

Both of these parakeets where found at different pet stores, we viewed them over a periods of time (6-8 months) and there seemed not interest in them. They looked lonely and almost abandoned (in the darkest corners of the stores) so we decided to take them on. Jill was first and then Jack a year later.

They hit it off straight away and in the next season started to breed. We kept an eye on them and noticed in the first season that they were not surviving, we think they were not feeding them enough. So in the next season we watched and when the first passed we decided to take them out and hand rear. We re-homed most of them and kept a few, but these parakeets are not for the faint hearted. They like human interaction but no affection, they will sit with you but do not like to be touched. This works for some people but not all.

Care

Jack and the babies have proven to be hardy and have had not issues. Unfortunately after the last season we think that Jill had a calcium deficiency (something we have witnessed in our Conures), we took her to the Vet to have a calcium injection but she passed in the night.

Interesting facts about the Barnard Parakeets

Also known as the Australian Ring Neck and Mallee Ringnecks.  They are also often called 28 parrots because when in flight their call sounds like they are saying “twenty eight”

They eat a wide range of foods that include nectar, insects, seeds and fruit. It will eat orchard-grown fruit, we found that they particularly like pears.

These birds enjoy taking a bath so as well as clean drinking water, fresh bathing water should be made available. We found every time we filled the sink up to do dishes they were first in.

As pet birds, they are described as being less noisy than other birds of a similar size. They don’t like handling as much as Amazons or Cockatoos but do need plenty of attention.

Their lifespan in captivity is around 10 years.
