The Lorri’s

Arrived: Spring 2020 + many babies

Where we found them

These little clowns of the bird (parrot) world definitely have the most character. While on holiday in South Africa at sanctuary in Otshorn we feel in love with these little “monsters” full of fun and love a little gig and tickle.

We purchased 6, as they are colony birds, from various people not wanting them anymore as little is known about how to care for them. Unlike other parrots these birds eat nectar and fruit so there diet and excrement is liquid. They are so mischievous they are even great at targeting you with said excrement at will. We keep them in one of our largest avairies and soon they started to breed, our rare tangerine Lorikeet and a (not so) common Lorikeet hit it off and we have had numerous unusually coloured babies from them.

Care

We have been extremely luck with our Lorikeets, with no losses due to illness. They are vey hardy and bearly even notice the colder months as they are always looking for play no matter the weather

Interesting facts about Lorikeets

Lorikeets are constantly active and noisy, feeding in large groups and even in the company of other parrots or other honey-eating birds. Well known as the clowns of the parrot world.

Lorikeets have very specialized tongues for feeding on nectar. They have distinctive long tongues with tiny hair-like structures line the end of the tongue in the shape of an “U.” When a lorikeet extends its tongue during feeding, the papillae stand on end, like bristles on a brush, allowing nectar and pollen to be easily soaked up. Unique to lorikeets, this trait has earned them the nickname “brush-tongued” parrots.

Smaller species of Lori’s live 12 – 15 years in captivity and larger species live 25–35 years in captivity.
