Are you ready to adopt

Bird ownership is from a 15 – 65 year commitment and continuous care

Are you ready for what is needed

Taking care of birds and parrots is such a rewarding experience, but it does come with its responsibilities! These smart, social companions need more than just a cage and some seed to thrive. Start with a spacious, clean cage that gives them plenty of room to move, play, and spread their wings. Add in fun enrichment toys to keep their curious minds busy.
Their diet should be a colourful mix of seeds, pellets, fresh fruits, and veggies—because who doesn’t love variety? Birds love company, so be sure to spend lots of time interacting and bonding with them to keep them happy and stress-free. Don’t forget about regular visits to an avian vet to keep them in tip-top shape. Lastly, make your home bird-safe by avoiding things like toxic plants, fumes (all fragrances are very harmful to parrots), or tiny objects they might get into or try swollow. With love, patience, and care, you’ll have a feathered friend who brings joy to your life every day!

Can you handle the hormones

Caring for a parrot during their hormonal season can feel a bit like handling a teenager with raging hormones—lots of emotions and unpredictable behaviour! It’s important to remember that this is a natural part of their life cycle, and patience is key. During this time, your parrot might become more vocal, territorial, or even nippy. Give them a little extra space if they seem cranky, and avoid over-stimulating behaviours like excessive petting, especially around their back or under wings, as it can increase hormonal triggers.

Providing plenty of chewable toys and activities can help redirect their energy and keep them busy. Keep their routine consistent, and ensure they get enough sleep, as sleep deprivation can make hormonal behaviour worse. Most importantly, approach them with understanding and love—this phase will pass (until next year), and with your support, they’ll feel safe and cared for through it all.

Hours experience

We think of them as cats with wings

As a family of parrot lovers, we’ve learned to embrace the mood swings of our little “cats with wings.” Just like cats, they have no problem letting you know when they’re not in the mood for attention—whether it’s by flying off or giving you a cheeky nip! Please respect their boundaries.

On the flip side, when they do want affection, they’ll make sure you know it. If you’re on your phone, expect a quick bite to remind you who’s boss. Chatting with someone else? They’ll happily interrupt to steal your focus. And don’t even think about eating or drinking without offering them a share—they feel entitled to the spoils! Patience, consistency, and a healthy dose of humour go a long way. Some parrots even understand the word “NO,” so stay calm and reasonable—they’ll get the message (eventually)!
